GOOD CHARACTER!!
We need it every day!
GOOD CHARACTER!!
At home, at school, at play!

GOOD CHARACTER!! Helps us to get along!
With Good Character, we can choose right instead of wrong!

GOOD CHARACTER: I show RESPECT to you!
It means that I say, “Please,” and “Thanks,” and yeah, yeah, “May I,” too!

GOOD CHARACTER is something else, you see…
When I turn in my homework, that’s RESPONSIBILITY!

COOPERATION! That’s just another sign
Of GOOD CHARACTER!! Let’s keep that in mind!

CARING…shows GOOD CHARACTER, too!
It means that I am nice and kind instead of teasing you!

GOOD CHARACTER!! Another trait is HONESTY!
It means that I will tell the truth…Now that’s no mystery!

GOOD CHARACTER!!! PATRIOTISM, I say,
Means that you and I will always love the USA!!

THEN AND NOW...

Back in the day, so sad to say
Inequality
Was prevalent—and this meant
That Black people were not free!

Young and old were bought and sold
On the auction blocks
Some were tough—their treatment, rough:
They were chained and shackled in stocks…

Right from the start, torn apart
Were countless families
Snatched away on any given day
With very few moments of ease.

They cooked and cleaned, plowed, planted and gleaned
Ever pushed to the max
Weak or strong, all day long
They performed all kinds of acts.

For years and years, blood, sweat and tears
Was the Black man’s plight
And, he, indeed, wasn’t allowed to read
Nor could he learn to write!

If a slave—smart and brave
Did learn, it was mind-blowing:
He would teach, whomever he could reach
Without his master knowing!

Slaves had dreams, and made up schemes
To flee their dreadful state
But to challenge a master—led to disaster--
And often, a far worse fate…

Those causing unrest—were harshly addressed:
Payback by the Whites
Was designed to scare—slaves EVERYWHERE
The message: YOU HAVE NO RIGHTS!!

A law was even passed, and held steadfast
To keep slaves out of the loop
They couldn’t earn money, raise food for the family
Or assemble as a group.

The Emancipation Proclamation
In 1863
Signed by President Lincoln meant
That slaves, in fact, were free!!

They persevered, though it appeared
That unfairness would prevail
There were some “wins” with marches and sit-ins
Often on a pretty large scale…

While Blacks and their inventions (too numerous to mention)
In history have their place,
Unfortunately, some Whites STILL see
An inferior race!

So the struggle goes on, the battle’s not won
Yes, we still must fight
To be treated fairly—dealt with, squarely
Will things ever get RIGHT?
Will things ever really get right??
Will things ever really get right?
Will things ever really get right?
